Why I Love the Sons of the American Revolution (And It’s Not Just the Tricorn Hats… But They Help)”

Let me be honest: I didn’t join the Sons of the American Revolution just to wear knee breeches and look like a movie extra from “The Patriot” —but I won’t pretend it’s not a perk.
I love the SAR because where else can you combine genealogy, patriotism, history nerd-dom, muzzle-loaded armaments and really cool hats into one respectable organization?
It’s a place where honoring your patriot ancestor doesn’t mean just posting a blurry photo on Facebook—it means marching in parades, marking graves, presenting flags, and occasionally bringing an entire assembly to a stunned silence with a musket salute. That’s impact!
I love that in the SAR, we take our mission seriously but never take ourselves too seriously. We can recite the lineage of a Revolutionary War captain and debate who had the better uniform—Washington or Lafayette (the answer is obviously Lafayette, but that’s a separate conversation).
We’re the guys who get excited over primary documents, historic flags, and discovering that our 5th-great-grandfather fought at a battle no one else remembers but which we will now commemorate with a bronze plaque, a ceremony, and a color guard like no other!

But what I really love? It’s the purpose. The SAR makes sure that the people who built this country aren’t forgotten in a footnote. We don’t just remember the Revolution—we revive it. Through contests for students, community programs, and good old-fashioned pageantry, we make liberty cool again (yes, even to middle schoolers).
In short: I love the SAR because it lets me serve, connect, and celebrate. It lets me honor the past without getting stuck in it. And yes, because nothing beats the feeling of adjusting your cocked tri-corn hat, stepping into formation, laughing at the rain and thinking, “Yeah… my ancestors would be proud.”
